Abstract (EN)

The events that is mentioned as 6-7th September Events into our political history is the action of pressure, violence, and pillage occurred against the minorities the majority of which was consisted of the Greeks in the big cities like İstanbul, Ankara, and İzmir in 1955. Since the events happened on the 6 and 7th September, it went down in history as 6-7th September Events. As it is known, at the beginning of the 20th Century, the age of empires started to end, the empires subverted gave their place to the nation states. One of the empires subverted in the first half of the 20th Century was the Ottoman Empire. Ottoman Empire was a multicultural and multinational state that reigned in the geography of Anatolia, Balkans, and Middle East for many years. In the 1st World War, the Ottoman Empire that took side with Germany entered in the process of dissolution when the Central Powers lost the war. The conquerors of the 1st World War wanted to share the Anatolia with the plans that they made at the desk, and they started the occupations. Against the occupations, the struggle of independence given by the Anatolian people was resulted with victory, and Republic of Turkey, which is a nation state was founded in place of it. Since Republic of Turkey is a state founded on the remainder of the empire, it had many different ethnical and cultural societies survive within its borders. Some of them who are Greeks, Armenians, and Jews gained the status of minority by Luasanne Agreement, and they obtained some rights. The young Turkish Republic, who developed on the foundation of nation - state, sometimes attempted to melt the minorities and different elements in the single pot. The events that passed in our political history as the 6-7th September Events are the events that these attempts resulted by violence and blood. The minorities living in the big cities like İstanbul, Ankara, İzmir, and the minorities the majority of which was consisted of the Greeks were exposed to pressure and violence, some of them died, their temples were destroyed, and the job-sites of many of them were pillaged. On the eve of the 6-7th September Events, a series of crisis drove the wedge a lot between Turkey and Greece because of Cyprus matter. This tension reached at such a point that even a small even could be the material of propaganda against the opposite side. In such an environment, the newspaper İstanbul Express headlined the news on 6th September 1955 that Atatürk's house where he was born in Athens was bombed ( that it was a blast bomb and only a window of the house was broken will be learned later.) to its readers as flash. The people who were agitated by the effect of these news started to pillage the houses and job-sites of the Greeks and the other minorities in Beyoglu region. The events got out such fast that the other minorities living in the other quarters and in the cities like Ankara and İzmir were also effected by this pillaging attempt. After these events happened on the 6-7th September 1955, the resulting table was frightful. Many houses, job-sites, school, and temples belonging to the minorities were destroyed, many people were injured, and some of them died. After these painful events, many of the minorities had to migrate from Turkey where they had lived for many years and they knew as their main country. In this study performed, that media can cause the great social disasters the compensation of which isn't possible when it behaves irresponsibly has been told through the 6-7th September Events.
