Opinions of 7th grade students on the role of songs in developing speaking skill -A phenomenological study-

The purpose of this research is to examine the 7th grade students' views on the role of songs in developing speaking skills. The phenomenology design, one of the qualitative research designs, is used in the study. Participants are determined using the maximum variation sampling method, one of the purposive sampling methods. In the study; 7 (seven) schools of different sizes, different socioeconomic levels and with different opportunities are selected as a sample in order to represent every part of Ödemiş, district of Izmir. 26 (twenty-six) students studying in these schools are participants of the study. Research data are collected through a semi-structured interview form developed by the researcher. Descriptive analysis method is used in analyzing the data. In the analysis, the sound recordings are transcribed firstly and then these recordings are analyzed. As a result of the interviews, the views of the students on speaking skills with the songs they listen to are gathered under 3 (three) main themes: "Vocabulary Learning", "Speech Disorders", "Effective Speaking". Considering the different opinions of the students; the main themes created are analyzed by dividing them into various sub-themes, and sub-themes into some categories within themselves. Vocabulary learning is composed of 4 (four) sub-themes: "Turkish word learning", "permanent vocabulary learning", "learning words only from foreign songs" and "not learning words". The theme of speech mistakes is composed of 5 (five) sub-themes: "local dialect use", "pronunciation errors in songs", "singer's effect", "using foreign words" and "using slang words". The theme of effective speaking is composed of 4 (four) sub-themes: "stress, pause and intonation in songs", "songs and fluent speech", "songs and speaking speed", "use of songs in activities".
