Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to evaluate and interpret the learning of 8th grade students according to the SOLO taxonomy in the teaching of concept cartoons related to the subject of "transformation geometry" which is the sub-learning area of the "geometry and measurement" learning area of mathematics lesson. The study was carried out with 45 (26 girls, 19 boys) 8th grade students studying in a primary school in İpekyolu district of Van province during the spring term of 2018-2019 academic year. Since the study aimed to observe and improve the process in the classroom environment at the application stage, the researcher teacher method (action research) method was used. In the study, nine concept cartoon activities were applied to the students, the learning outcomes of the students were examined in line with the activities and their learning levels were evaluated according to the SOLO Taxonomy. The data were collected with the help of tripartite technique (student activity sheets, observations, video-sound recording applied by the teaching process) and the dialogue with the students during the study. A researcher with knowledge of the SOLO taxonomy and the researcher teacher participated in the data analysis. The researchers read the student answers independently and assigned the student answers to the appropriate levels according to the SOLO taxonomy. As a result of the study, it was observed that the majority of 8th grade student answers were below the IY level according to the SOLO Taxonomy. It was observed that students had difficulty in defining the concepts of translation, symmetry and reflection. Besides, when the students' opinions and the process are analyzed, it was concluded that all of the students had positive opinions about this learning environment and it would be beneficial to use concept cartoon activities in the lessons. Keywords: concept cartoon, SOLO taxonomy, transformation geometry
