Abstract (EN)
The basis of a language is vocabulary. Language cannot be learned and used without words. However, it will never be enough to try to learn words individually. Here we encounter collocations. Every language has its own unique collocation formations. Collocations indicate which words a word can form meaningful associations with (for example, "to brush teeth" but not "to brush eyes"). What a new language learner will need most is a resource that presents how these associations are expressed in the target language. It is because the translations of the individual words that make up the collocation often do not express the desired concept. This study is such a one that offers English equivalents of Turkish collocations, which can be a source for both language learners and language teachers. Compared to Turkish, there are more comprehensive and systematic lists and corpus studies in English. A total of 658 words categorised as nouns and verbs at A1 level in The Oxford 3000TM by CEFR Level list, which is one of them, were evaluated as the root or primary word of collocations. In the first stage, these words were translated into Turkish and 595 entries were obtained. Then, these words were searched in the Turkish National Corpus (TNC), the most comprehensive corpus available in Turkish. As a result, a detailed Turkish collocation list was created. Finally, the obtained Turkish translations were translated into English. The data obtained were evaluated in terms of the similarities and differences between Turkish and English.
