Abbey Theatre; William Butler Yeats and Lady Gregory

Abbey Theatre is the struggle for establishing the identity of Irish people via art and the theatre right after getting rid of the British slavery. As well as being known as ?playwrights? theatre?, Abbey Theatre also attracts attention for choosing the playwrights and the actors from the Irish. Trying to survive after the great famine and the World War first, they showed importance on all the elements for being Irish and especially to prove that they could rise again from their ashes. Master establishers, William Butler Yeats and Lady Gregory wanted to be fed entirely from Irish from choosing the plays to the poetry theatre that they dreamed of, from their local cultures and analysing the public life to international human subjects as well and they succeeded by doing so. In this work, the pre-establishing, establishing and the problems the establishers faced during establishment are under debate and the route to the consciousness to be a unique public and the matters are processed. The establishers who desired to give messages while entertaining the audience and the language they used to out forth the problems of the Irish people and naming the importance of preserving their identity, they were very succesful so still Abbey Theatre has their plays in their repertoire today.
