Abstract (EN)

Purpose: The aim of our study is to compare the frequency of pneumothorax and pneumothorax accompanied by rib fracture in patients admitted to the emergency department with blunt chest trauma and to evaluate the patient clinic according to age, gender and trauma mechanism. Methods: This study was conducted retrospectively on 519 people with blunt chest trauma who were admitted to the hospital emergency department. Patients were evaluated according to age, gender, trauma mechanism, presence of pneumothorax, rib fracture, abdominal injury, spinal injury, central injury, extremity injury, maxillofacial injury, Glasgow coma scale (GCS) score, outcome status, forensic opening status, mortality status and thorax appendage. evaluated for injury. Results: While the average age of the 519 patients we included in the study was 45.12, 81.1% of the patients were male and 18.9% were female. 52% of the applications were due to traffic accidents. Pneumothorax was present in 53.2% of the patients and rib fracture was present in 78.8%. Abdominal injury was found to be 14.6%, spinal injury 33.5%, central injury 12.5%, extremity injury 42%, and maxillofacial injury 14.8%. GCS was found to be good (15-14) with a rate of 86.3%. While nearly 60% of the patients were hospitalized in the ward, the rate of those hospitalized in the intensive care unit was 34.5%. 79.6% of the applications were judicial cases. Mortality rate was found to be 7.5%. The rate of additional injuries other than pneumothorax and rib fracture in the thorax was detected at 68.8%. Conclusion: We found that the majority of those who applied to the emergency department with blunt chest trauma were men, the most common reason for admission was traffic accidents and the most common additional injury was extremity injury. It was observed that the frequency of pneumothorax decreased and rib fracture increased with age. It has been observed that falls are more common in the elderly population. Additional injuries other than pneumothorax and rib fracture in the thorax were detected at a very high rate. At the same time, accompanying cranial, extremity and spinal injuries were also found to be high. Therefore, the treatment and long-term follow-up of patients should be approached systematically, taking into account the age, trauma mechanism and additional injuries of the patients. History and physical examination should never be skipped, caution should be taken in terms of complications, and appropriate diagnosis and treatment should be performed quickly. Key words: Trauma, chest trauma, blunt chest trauma
