Abstract (EN)

Introduction: Social media use is one of the factors affecting the sleep of adolescents who do not meet their sleep needs adequately. Sleep hygiene training plays a crucial role in improving sleep health. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of healthy social media use and sleep hygien training based on the Health Promotion Model on sleep quality of adolescents. Methods: The sample of the study, which was conducted in a quasi-experimental design with a non-randomized pre-test-post-test control group, consisted of 105 adolescents (experimental group=51, control group=54) training in the 9th-10th-11th grades. In the pre-test, datas were collected using the Adolescent Information Form, Sleep Quality Scale and Sleep Variables Questionnaire, Social Media Addiction Scale, and Social Media Disorder Scale. The experimental group received three-week Social Media Use and Sleep Hygiene Training based on the Health Promotion Model. The control group did not receive any intervention. One week after the training given to the experimental group, the scale forms were applied again and the post-test was completed. Three months after the training program, we practice re-test phase to the groups with the same scale forms. In addition, sleep diaries were distributed to the adolescents and messages were sent to remind them to fill them in for a week. Results: Experimental and control groups were similar in terms of descriptive characteristics (p˃0.05). The sleep quality scale score of the experimental group was significantly higher than the control group in the post-test (p=0.001) and re-test (p=0.019) measurements after the training. In the post-test after the training, the experimental group's weekday sleep duration increased significantly compared to the control group (p=0.044). There is a significant difference between the scale scores of the experimental group before and after the training (p=0.000). The SMAS total score of the experimental group was significantly higher than the control group in the post-test and a decrease in the level of addiction. (p=0.044). The post-training scores of the experimental group were found to be significantly different from the control group in the sub-dimensions of the SMAS as a preoccupation, mood regulation, repetition and conflict (p˂0.05). The Social Media Disorder Scale score of the experimental group was significantly lower than the control group in the re-test measurements (p=0.001). Conclusion: It was observed that training on healthy use of social media and sleep hygiene, which is one of the factors affecting the sleep quality of adolescents, increased sleep quality and sleep duration.
