Difficulties and solutions for understanding of chemistry subjects of science education in elementary schools of the city of Afyonkarahisar

Primary Education is the first step that the students acquanted with Science of Art,acquired the research skills and tried to consciously interpret the events in theirdaily lives. Therofore, a qualified chemistry education given within thecurriculum of science in the elementary school and its intelligibility has beenprivileged. The objective of this study performed at five stages as a TeacherMeetings, Preliminary Questionnaire, Seminar, Survey Lecture and Questionnaireis to determine the difficulties from being understood of chemistry subjects incurriculum of science effectuated by STD numbered 2518 at November 2000 bytheachers and students in elementary schools at Afyonkarahisar and to suggesttheir solutions. However, a new curriculum of science applied initially for 4th and5th classes in Turkey at 2005-2006 teaching years is out of this study. Todetermine currently status of science education, the questionnaires of ?StudentStatus? and ?Teacher Status? were applied to teachers and students. In addition,an ?Ideal Student? questionnaire was performed to evaluate an ideal scienceeducation from the standpoint of students. The questionnaires of ?Teacher Status?,?Student Status? and ?Ideal Student? were applied to 697 teachers in 51 schools,1131 students in 43 schools and 757 students in 32 schools, respectively. The dataobtained in this study was transfered to the computer program and evaluated byusing some statistical methods. Our results showed that the curriculum of scienceeffectuated by November 2000 is not sufficiently satisfied the requirements ofteachers and students, total course credit of science education in a week is notenough, laboratory workings can not be essentially performed, the textbooks usedin the science edication are not including sufficiently the informations, etc. and wesuggested the solutions for these difficulties.2006, 182 pagesKeywords: Science, science education, chemistry education, problems inchemistry learning
