Ukûdü'l-Cevâhi̇r Ahmed-i̇ Dâî analysis -Critical edition-dictionary

Ahmedi Dâî, is one of the founders of classical Turkish poetry and also one of the most renowned poets of 14th century. He has a major influence on the development of classical Turkish poetry. He is a multi-skilled encyclopaedist person , who has given works on fields such as; literature , commentary , hadith , dictionary , prosody , medical , history , astronomy, construction and dream interpretation. "Ukûdü'l-Cevahir", which constitutes the subject of this thesis is a poetical dictionary that has been written by Ahmed-i Dâî. It has also been dedicated by Ahmed-i Dâî to his disciple II. Murat. The Arabic-Farsi poetic dictionaries that has been written during the foundation period of Anatolian Turkish literature are seen as the prototypes of the Arabic-Persian and Persian-Turkish poetic dictionaries that has been written centuries later. These dictionaries were written to teach pupils, how to memorize words as well as teaching them literature terms like ryhme and prosody. "Ukudul cevahir" was written between 13th and 15th centuries and just as its likes , its one of the first examples of poetic dictionary tradition too. This thesis on "Ukûdü'l-Cevâhir" consists of four chapters. The first chapter is a brief summary that consists of poet's life ,his literal characteristic and his works. The second chapter is dedicated to the revision of "Ukûdü'l-Cevâhir" after a small introduction about Arabic-Persian poetic dictionary tradition.the third chapter is the critical edition , which has been prepared by comparing the five manuscripts of the book that are stored in manuscripts of Turkish libraries. The fourth and the final part of the chapter is a dictionary, consists of comparative charts that indicates the meanings of the Arabic-Persian and underline Turkish words that take place in the text in todays Turkish.
