Conjunctions in Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar's novels

In Turkey Turkish, words are divided into two as meaningful and functional words. Conjunctions form some of the functional words. Conjunctions are the grammatical elements that bind words, word groups, or sentences together providing a unity in terms of meaning or form between the grammatical elements to which they are subject and adding different meanings to the unity they are in due to the task they undertake although they do not have a function on their own. In this study, the definition, structure, functions of conjunctions, disagreements in related studies about conjunctions and the origins of conjunctions are dealt with. In the light of all this information, conjunctions in A. H. Tanpınar's three novels (Huzur, Saatleri Ayarlama Enstitüsü ve Mahur Beste) have been identified and examined. In the introduction part of the study, after a brief supply of information about conjunctions the required information about Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar's life, works and literary personality is given. Later, the definitions of conjunctions in some grammar books in Turkey Turkish are given and in the light of these, a peculiar conjunction definition has been attempted by us. In addition, the difference between conjunctions and prepositions was mentioned, and the use of conjunctions in Turkish was investigated chronologically. In the second part of the study, conjunctions were examined according to their origins, functions, and structures. In addition, a bibliography of the publications accessible by us about conjunctions has been added. In the third part of the study, Tanpınar's three novels were analyzed in terms of conjunctions, the conjunctions were determined, a brief information was given about the function of the conjunctions in the sentence, and sample sentences related to each conjunction were listed under the related conjunction. In the conclusion part, the numerical data of the conjunctions found in the novels are given and the group of conjunctions that is in the majority are delineated.
