Values education in alternative schools according to the opinions of academicians, teachers and administrators

The thesis aims to examine education stakeholders' opinions about values education in alternative schools. The study is a qualitative research. Participants described their alternative school awareness with 6 themes and 43 codes. The definitions most frequently mentioned by the participants are non-traditional school and school that offers education by doing. There are 4 participants who have no awareness of alternative schools. Participants defined their values education awareness with 3 themes and 20 codes. By definition, participants mostly preferred education based on values. They think that values education is mostly based on moral philosophy. Participants defined values education in alternative schools with 3 themes and 21 codes. Participants see values education in alternative schools as education provided within the scope of non-religious values and as education in which universal values are conveyed the most. 6 participants have no knowledge about values education in alternative schools. Participants defined the values conveyed in alternative schools with 3 themes and 19 codes. Participants defined the methods used by alternative schools in values education with 3 themes and 9 codes. Participants identified 15 themes regarding the difficulties that may be experienced in values education in alternative schools. Participants identified 9 themes regarding the effectiveness of values education in alternative schools. Participants think that values education in alternative schools is effective in helping students know themselves, establishing and maintaining relationship continuity, recognizing social values, being tolerant, raising awareness, being responsible and being independent.
