Abstract (EN)

The primary aim of this study is to examine how leadership is perceived in an academic context by heads of departments and academic staff. The study seeks to gain a deep understanding of the concept of leadership in universities and its impact on academic environments. The study adopts a qualitative analysis method and utilizes a semi-structured interview form developed by the researcher as a data collection tool. Interviews were conducted with the heads of four departments and 33 academic staff members from these departments at a state university in Ankara using a pre-prepared interview form. The data obtained were coded using thematic analysis through the MAXQDA 2024 Analytics Pro qualitative analysis software, and main themes, sub-themes, and categories were identified. In line with the research questions, the focus was on how department heads perceive their leadership and managerial roles, how leadership manifests in academic work, and the leadership expectations of academics and academic environments. The study reveals that leadership in academic settings has a multidimensional and complex structure. While differing opinions exist regarding the need for leadership in academic settings, it is understood that leadership is particularly important in areas such as directing academic work, ensuring coordination, and providing motivation. The study also indicates that perceptions of academic leadership vary across different levels. Heads of departments perceive leadership more as managing administrative processes and decision-making, whereas academic staff emphasize a supportive and guiding leadership role. The findings highlight that leadership in an academic context brings social interaction, guidance, and motivational attributes to the forefront. Based on these results, it is recommended that leadership in universities be addressed with a more inclusive and participatory approach. This study aims to offer new insights into the significance of academic leadership and the development of future academic leadership models.
