An investigation of Akiyoshi Kitaoka's "Peripheral Drift Illusion" theory and motion perception created in the visual periphery

Abstract (EN)

In the perception stage, the brain pays attention not only to signals coming to the eyes, but also to expectations based on previous experiences, and the brain responds to signals not in the real world as if they were there, in other words, an illusion occurs. Among the most important and core types of geometric illusions are the Muller-Lyer, Ebbinghaus, Ponzo, and similar illusions. Actually, it is known that all optical illusions are used in many fields. Studies of other visual illusions have also been done through varieties of core illusions. Some of these include applications based on color, geometry, perspective, and movement. In Akiyoshi Kitaoka's designs based on optical illusion theory, we observe the perception of motion on still ground. The movements occurring on these created patterns are a still image, not a gif application. Actually, illusions based on shape, color, and movement reveal the fact that the eye cannot remain stable while looking at an object. When looking at a point, the small involuntary movements of the eye play an important role in triggering illusion. According to the positions and fine calculations of colors, lines cause visual perception and subsequent perception of imaginary movement in the brain. Illusions of motion caused by value change are generally "peripheral drift illusions." This illusion evokes an imaginary experience of movement. The most important example of this is A. Kitaoka's "rotating snakes" illusion. Akiyoshi Kitaoka's theory arose following Fraser and Wilcox's study on illusions. The aim of the research is to analyze the creation of compositions based on perception, visual perception and illusion, which form the basis of Foundational Art Education studies, and to examine how much of the peripheral drift illusion effect we can experience, especially in students' work on movement and rhythm. In addition, when we synthesized the design details of the "rotating snakes" illusion with students' work, it was concluded that their use of this imaginary movement and the movement-rhythm effect would also increase further.
