Abstract (EN)
The world being in a technological era leads to new developments every day. Every development in technology affects us individually or socially. Social relations, work life, habits, and living spaces reshape with every technological development. The Internet of Things has an impact that cannot be ignored on those changes. Despite that the Internet of Things is a relatively new technology, application fields are developing rapidly. The Internet of Things is widely used in smart home applications. As classical home understanding evolving to smart homes, it brought radical changes in the living spaces of individuals. Home is the most private area of human beings and creates a barrier to outside threats. While improvements in smart home technologies make places smarter, they increase the intervention in private life and the protection of personal data. Thus smart home automations and sensors placed in IoT-based devices lead to collecting personal data much easier. While smart devices collect personal data invisibly on most personal space of an individual, it increases the need to protect personal data. The increased share of smart homes in the technology market also increases the actors involved in collecting personal data. Numerous actors that are both public and private being in our homes increases the risk to fundamental rights and freedoms. Although individuals focus on the benefits of smart home automation, they are not aware of the risks they are taking yet. Although there are regulations regarding the protection of personal data, applying those regulations is highly important. Invisible personal data processing that happens on smart home automation leads to discrimination or interfering with the fundamental rights and freedoms of individuals. In addition, if an individual thinks that they are under surveillance within the scope of personal data processing at home it will make it harder to develop their personality. Within the scope of this study, Internet of Things technology, features, and difficulties encountered in the scope of Internet of Things technologies. Regulations, applications, solutions and protection of personal data in Turkiye and the European Union will be analyzed.
