Plasma d-dimer levels: A significant biomarker of fibrin breakdown in dogs with acute renal injury

Abstract (EN)
In this study, it is aimed to determine to what extent the D-dimer formed as a result of fibrin destruction is a useful biomarker in the diagnosis and determination of the disease to dogs with acute renal injury. A total of 20 dogs of different races, ages and genders, with acute renal injury (n = 10) and healthy (n = 10), brought to the Aydin Adnan Menderes University Veterinary Faculty Department of Internal Medicine, were included in the study. According to the anamnesis, whole blood samples were collected from animals that were suspected to have acute renal damage and whose urinary and creatinine levels were increased when serum biochemical analyzes were performed and clinical findings were consistent with acute kidney damage. The disease was staged in accordance by IRIS criteria in the direction of serum biochemical and urine analyzes in dogs. In order to collect blood samples, 2.5 ml blood samples were taken from V. cephalica lateralis, V. saphena antebrachii in blue cap tubes containing sodium citrate according to the technique. After blood collection, blood samples were centrifuged at 6,000 rpm for 5 minutes to separate the blood plasma. D-dimer levels were measured from the separated plasma sample with the Finecare FIA system FS-131 instrument. As a result of the statistical examination, D-dimer levels were found to be 0.56 ± 0.64 (0.10-1.60) in 10 dogs in the control group, and D-dimer levels in 10 dogs with acute renal injury on average 4.59 ± 3.94 (0.2-10.00) was found. As a result of evaluating the data of acute renal injury and control group dogs, a statistically significant increase in D-dimer levels was determined in acute renal damaged dogs (p <0.001). In parallel with the studies conducted, D-dimer levels were found to be higher than patients with normal biochemistry and urine values due to loss of function and deterioration in the kidneys. As a result, it is assumed that D-dimer levels, a product of fibrin degradation, may increase in dogs with acute renal damage as an indicator of prefibrinolytic activity. It can be xvii suggested that measurement of D-dimer levels, as well as routine biochemical analysis, is significant in terms of prognosis, diagnosis and treatment.
