Investigation of relationship between team work attitude and patient safety attitude in operating room employees

Aim: This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted to investigate the relationship between teamwork attitude and patient safety attitude in operating room employees. Methods: The sample of the study consists of 135 team members (surgeon, nurse, anesthesiologist, anesthesia technician) who have been working in Ege University Health Application and Research Center operating theaters for at least 6 months and accepted to participate in the study between March-May 2019. Research data was collected using; Personal Information Form, Teamwork Attitudes Questionnaire and Patient Safety Attitude Questionnaire. Data were analyzed by using the number, percentage, mean, standard deviation, correlation analysis, Kruskall Wallis H Test, Mann Whitney U test in Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) for Windows 15.0 at the Department of Biostatistics and Medical Informatics, Ege University School of Medicine. Results: The mean age of the operating room employees was 32.96 ± 6.90, the mean duration for working in operating room was 6.58 ± 6.4 years, 40% were surgeons and 32.6% were nurses. The total average score of the Team Work Attitude Scale of the operating room employees was 113.3 ± 9.6 and the mean score of the Patient Safety Attitude Scale was 121 ± 21. It was determined that as the employees age, occupational years and duration for working in operating room increased, the teamwork attitudes questionnaire scores increased (p<0.05). Cunclusion: The mean scores of teamwork attitudes questionnaire of the participants were found to be good, and the average of patient safety attitude questionnaire was found to be moderate. No statistically significant relationship was found between the mean total score of teamwork attitudes and the mean total score of patient safety attitudes.
