Abstract (EN)

This thesis examines the relationship between the social structure of the Amsterdam Jewish Community in 17th-century Holland and the process through which Baruch Spinoza was excommunicated from that community. The primary aim of the study is to demonstrate that Spinoza's herem (ban) was not solely a response to his individual ideas, but also stemmed from the tension those ideas created within the communal structure and its relationship with the authorities in Amsterdam. In this context, the study explores the departure of Sephardic Jews from the Iberian Peninsula and how this historical background influenced the formation of the Amsterdam Jewish Community. It also analyzes the institutional structure of the community, especially the authority of the governing body known as the Mahamad, and the role of herem as a disciplinary tool within the community. Additionally, Spinoza's conflict with the community, the content of the herem document, and the rationale behind this penalty are discussed considering his philosophical ideas and the religious, social, and political context of the time. Primary sources used in the research include Spinoza's own works, relevant communal documents of the period and the herem decree, while secondary sources consist of historical and sociological analyses. The study concludes that Spinoza's excommunication was not solely due to his religious-philosophical positions, but also to the perception of threat his ideas posed within a community that operated under a conditional tolerance and sought to maintain harmony with the governing authorities.
