Amazon sarcophagi in Anatolia

In this study titled "Amazon sarcophagi found in Anatolia", the workshops producing sarcophagi firstly, the locations of these workshops, the years they produced, the subjects depicted on sarcophagi and the production of Amazonian sarcophagus, were examined in particular. Rome, Attica and Dokimeion workshops had a say in the production of sarcophagi in the Roman Imperial Period with their unique architectural decorations and figures. In the second part of our study, the differences and similarities of Amazon depictions in these workshops were investigated. Afterwards, the most comprehensive ones were selected from the studies on Amazon sarcophagi and the classification suggestions of the researchers who carried out these studies were included. In the third part of the study, the classification of the Amazonian sarcophagi found in Anatolia was made. It is divided into two groups as Attica and Dokimeion Type. The most up-to-date and Anatolian-based study was used when grouping Attic Type Amazonian sarcophagi. Dokimeion Type Amazons sarcophagi are divided into three groups according to the decorations on the sarcophagus boats. The figures on the grouped sarcophagi and the templates they created were examined. These classified sarcophagi, iconographically and stylistically examined, their distribution according to the workshops was determined.
