Abstract (EN)

This study examines the distinct barriers encountered by Zambia's Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) when seeking access to diverse finance alternatives, with a particular focus on how these constraints vary across economic sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, services, and trade. Grounded in secondary data and thematic analysis, the literature highlights that although SMEs are widely recognized as critical drivers of economic development, they are often treated as a homogenous group-overlooking sector-specific financing challenges. The findings reveal clear sectoral disparities: agricultural SMEs contend with seasonal income instability, climate variability, and commodity price fluctuations; manufacturing enterprises face limited access to long-term financing needed for capital investment, machinery, and skilled labor; service-sector SMEs are hindered by informality, weak financial records, and credit history gaps; while trade-based SMEs struggle with liquidity shortages and foreign exchange risks. Studies further highlight how gender inequality, geographic location, informality, digital exclusion, and weak institutional frameworks deepen the financing divide. Although government initiatives and alternative solutions such as microfinance and fintech platforms have made inroads, their reach remains insufficient to address the depth of these challenges. The literature concludes that SME financing challenges in Zambia are layered, systemic, and context-dependent, requiring tailored policy responses and institutional reforms. Future research should focus on developing localized, sector-sensitive strategies that address rural-urban disparities and strengthen financial inclusion across all SME categories.
