Abstract (EN)

viISOLATION OF CAMPYLOBACTER SPECIES IN RETAIL CHICKENMEATS IN REGION OF ANKARA(M.Sc. Thesis)Özge ErgülerGAZI UNIVERSITYINSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECNOLOGYJanuary 2007ABSTRACTIn this study, prevalance of Campylobacter species and their resistancedifferent antibiotics in total number of 75 chicken meat samplesconsisting of 25 wings, 25 thighs, 25 breasts , collected from differentmarketplaces and butchers, in total number of 50 inner organ samplesconsisting of 25 intestines and 25 livers, collected from slaughterhouseduring slaughtering process, in Ankara was performed. At the sametime in this samples the number of coliform group microorganism / E.coli was also counted. The samples were brought to the laboratoryunder sterilized conditions and examined at the same day. On 58 (77,3%) ones examined 75 chicken meat samples and on 49 (98%) onesexamined 50 inner organ samples thermophyllic Campylobacter spp.were isolated. From those isolates, 121 (89,6%) ones of chicken meatisolates were defined as C. jejuni, 17 (12,6%) isolates as C. coli, 7 (5,2%)isolates as C. lari. Besides, 118 (71,5%) inner organ isolates weredefined as C. jejuni, 34 (20,6%) isolates as C. coli, 13 (7,9%) isolates asC. lari. While 55 % of all the isolates of C. jejuni were identified asbiotype 1, 38 % as biotype 2, 5 % as biotype 3, 2 % as biotype 4, 86 % ofall the isolates of C. coli of as biotype 1, 14 % as biotype 2, all C. lariisolates 75 % as biotype 1, 25 % as biotype 2.viiIn the result of antibiogram tests it was seen that all the isolates thatwere resistant to cephalothine to which all thermophilliccampylolobacter are naturally resistant as known. A few C. jejuniisolates were resistant to chloramphenicol (3,2 %), gentamicin (3,6 %),eritromicin (4,3 %), majorty isolates of C. jejuni were found as resistantto ciprofloxacin (23,4 %), and nalidixic acid (14,75 %). Besides, similarlyC. coli isolates were also determined as resistant to eritromicin (2,25%), chloramphenicol (4,5 %), gentamicin (6,8 %), ciprofloxacin (50,8 %),and it was obtained that C. lari isolates were resistant tocholaramphenicol (5 %), ciprofloxacin (60,7 %), doxicycline (33,55 %).In the performed samples, the number of E. coli / coliform groupmicroorganism was calculated by using Most Probable Numbertecnique. And, in conclusion it was obtained between <0,30 unit/gr and>110,0 unit/gr .Science Code : 203.1.010Key Words : campylobacter, chicken meat, isolationPage Number : 105Advisor : Assoc.Prof.Dr.Nihal Yücel
