A study on relationship between level of mother's skill of empathy upbringing attitude

ABSTRACT A STUDY ON RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LEVEL OF MOTHER'S SKILL OF EMPATHY AND UPBRINGING ATTITUDE UÇMAZ HALICIOGLU İlknur Graduate Thesis, Educational Sciences Depertmant Thesis Advisor: Associate Doç. Abide GÜNGÖR October, 2004 The objective of this study is to research the relationship between level of mother's skill of empathy and upbringing attitude. In this study, the relationship of level of mother's skill of empathy and upbringing attitude with some demographic factors is also studied. Exemplar of the study consists of mothers of 532 children who go to the kindergarten of primery schools in the provinces of Çankaya, Keçiören, and Altındağ in 2002-2003 education term. Data of the research was obtained by using a personel information form mode by the researcher, Dökmen's skill of empathy scale B form and Bell's and Schaefer's (Parental Attitude Research Instrument, PARI) Results that are acquired reveal that according to the points of PARI, methers whose level of empathy skill is higher tend to be more protective and disciplinarian than those whose level of emphaty skill is love or medium. In the study, a relationship between level of empathy skill and factors of denial of democratic, housewife role and lock of harmony wasn't found.Findings of study shows that mother's levels of empathy skill don't vary according to agree of mothers, number of kids in the family, birth row of the kids who go to the kindergarten, age of fathers. In the research it's seen than mother's levels of empathy skill vary according to mother's some demographic features. It's determined that skill of empathy of mothers who have a professional occupation, are graduate from universities and at the medium and high part of SED is higher. In the light of results acquired in the study, educators and parents are advise so as to raise mother's level of empathy skill. Key words: Empathy, parental attitude, preschool education.
