Abstract (EN)

ABSTRACT MSc Thesis THE STUDY OF BEE PRODUCTS ( HONEY, ROYAL JELLY, POLEN AND PROPOLIS) MICROPHLORA AND ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITIES Neval BAYRAK FIRAT UNIVERSITY SCIENCE INSTITUTE BIOLOGY DEPARTMENT 2005, Page: 56 In this study honey, royal jelly, and polen samples which are sold in markets and pharmacies, and propolis samples' microphloras and antimicrobic activities were examined. While counting alive microorganisms in these products we used Disc Culture Method (Dilusion Method). We painted fort he total microorganism counting to Plate Count Agar, for mould and ferment count to Potatoes Desktros Agar, for counting coliform bacterium and E.cdi to Eosin Methylen Blue (EMB) Agar, for counting Staphylococcus to Chapman Agar, for counting Salmonella - Shigella to Salmonella - Shigella (S:S) Agar. We left the plaques to incubation in suitable heat and time. After the incubation we counted the colonies in petri boxes that contain 20-200 colonies. We calculated the average number. We multiplied this number with infrequency factor. So at the end we found alive microorganism number in lgr or in 1 mg. There was not fungi and yeast growth in the examined honey and propolis samples. On the other hand it was observed that fungi and yeast were grown in the studied royal jelly and polen. Also, it was reported that no bacteria was grown in the propolis samples while bacteria were grown in pollen, royal jelly and honey samples. It was dedected that the studied honey product had in a different ratio of antimicrobial and antifungal effects. It was determined the propolis had the highest antimicrobial and antifungal effects. Key Words: Bee product, Honey, Royal Jelly, Polen, Propolis, Antimicrobial Acticity, Microphlora.
