ABSTRACT THE DETECTIVE NOVEL IN ARABIC LITERATURE KHANSA ALHAMAD Doctoral Thesis, Department of Basic Islamic Sciences Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Musa ALP January 2025, 226 pages In recent years, there has been a significant increase in literary interest in the Arabic detective novel. This is an indication of the growing appeal of the detective novel as a literary genre among Arab readers. However, the Arab detective novel is still a subject of much debate among critics and academics who hold different views on its origins, development and characteristics. This study aims to shed light on this debate by focusing on the crime novel, the most common genre of the detective novel, within the framework of the emergence and development of the detective novel in the Arab world. This study also aims the different views on marginalization and nomenclature that the Arab detective novel has faced over the years. Despite these problems, this study has shown that the Arabic detective novel has witnessed a remarkable development in recent years, thanks to the contribution of many distinguished Arab writers interested in the detective novel. The study examines the salient features of the Arabic detective novel, focusing on how it differs from the Western novel in terms of theme, plot, characters and techniques used. This study analyzed a number of examples of Arabic crime fiction to shed light on the various trends and schools represented in this genre, highlighting the diversity and richness of the Arabic crime novel. It also examines the role of the Arabic detective novel in the Arab cultural scene, its capacity to address social and political issues, and its contribution to the development of modern thought. The Arabic detective novel can be considered a rich and interesting literary genre that deserves more attention and study as it has an important role in stimulating literary and cultural creativity in the Arab world. The Arabic detective novel is an important artistic and literary genre. It deserves more attention and study.
