Abstract (EN)

The first modern population register practices in Ottoman Empire were conducted to determine the potential recruits for the newly established army called "Asakir-i Mansure-i Muhammediyye" in place of the Guild of Jannisaries, to distribute and to correct the deficiencies in the collection of taxes, reinstitution of jizya tax in 1831. It is understood that the census which began in 1831 lasted for 4-5 years. Only the male population was registered in this census. During this period census was carried out in Artvin which was the centre of Livane Sanjak in Çıldır Province in 1835. The census in my study contains Muslim and Non-Muslim dwelling units in Murgul District and Artvin of Livane Sanjak in Çıldır Province. The Muslim population register number 2766 that takes place in Population Register Catalog (BOA, NFS.d) in the Ottoman Archive is detached while the Non-Muslim population register number 2779 was written together within the districts of Çıldır Province.
