Abstract (EN)

Reconstructing power asymmetries through literary translation: This dissertation aims to study the metonymic representation of literary translations from Turkish into German together with the contexts and poetics they were created in and the new structure they created. In this dissertation, TEDA, the state-promoted translation and publishing project, and Türkische Bibliothek (Turkish Library), a non-governmental organization sponsored translation project, are the main objects of study. The analysis of two contemporary translation projects covering translations from the same source literary system into the same target literary system by mostly same translators on one hand points out different motivations of different sponsors, on the other hand provides the opportunity to compare the translation process with non-sponsored translations. TEDA Project has been studied in two layers, considering both motivation of the source culture and positions of TEDA sponsored translation in the market, revealing a conflict between discourse and conditions of the market. The promotional material provided for Türkische Bibliothek indicates various interests by publisher, editors and translators whereas analyzing translations which were not-sponsored by Türkische Bibliothek or TEDA and which were in the market in the same period provides insight on the book and translation market. This dissertation opposes the view of perceiving translations as solely abstract processes. The research conducted has been agency-oriented and deems current conditions as concrete data instead of idealizing them, thus does not accept translation research as solely a text-oriented activity. The research process includes actors as autonomous elements in data collecting and processing phase. The research covered semi-structured interviews with the actors. The interviews aimed to reach consistent results through comparison of data gathered from interviews and gathered though analysis of paratexts.
