Assessment of the knowledge of the patients treated in tikrit teaching hospital on the factors contributing to recurrent urolithiasis

Urolithiasis is one of the most common urinary system diseases affecting individuals in a wide age range. The aim of this study is to evaluate the knowledge of patients treated in Tikrit Training Hospitals about the factors contributing to recurrent urolithiasis. The sample of the study consisted of 100 patients who applied to the urology polyclinics of Tikrit Training Hospital between 25 December 2021 and 25 May 2022. The study was conducted as a descriptive cross-sectional study. A total of 33 questions were used to evaluate the data about the patient information form and the reasons contributing to urolithiasis. The data were collected face to face by the researcher. Ethics Committee Approval No. 23 dated 20.12.2021 was obtained from Tirkit Training Hospital and Çankırı Karatekin University ethics committee for the study. SPSS version 22 was used in the analysis of the data. Numerical data are reported as frequency and percentage. The mean age of the individuals participating in the study was 34.2±14.00 years and 64% of the individuals were male patients, and 39% of the patients were between the ages of 18-29. The average of the answers given by the patients to the questions about the risk factors for recurrence of urolithiasis is 30.7%, and the total mean score of the MMS (1.28), shows that the patients have low knowledge about the treatment and prevention of recurrent urolithiasis. More than three-quarters of the participants (82.0%) showed that their level of knowledge was weak, (15.0%) moderate, and only (3.0%) had good knowledge. As a result, it is seen that the individuals participating in the study have insufficient knowledge about the lifestyle changes to be made regarding the recurrence of urolithiasis. It is recommended that healthcare professionals include urolithiasis risk factors, lifestyle changes and possible treatments in patient education.
