The impacts of European migrant crisis on the idea of Euroscepticism

​The European Refugee Crisis, which started in 2015, has had a direct impact on the idea of Euroscepticism and it continues to be so among the nation states that are members of the European Union (EU). The European Refugee Crisis continues as an issue that causes deep debates about the structure, function and future of the EU, and bifurcates and deepens existing debates. The EU regulations, which are believed to impose more burdens on the frontier countries with the latest rules, with the idea of ​​protecting the border unity that is accepted to exist among the EU member countries, has led to intense political debates, especially between the countries in that kind of geographical structure and other member countries, and has caused questioning of the democratic structure of the union once again. However, it can be argued that the rising Eurosceptic ideology emphasizes nation-state dominance and national identities against the cultural unity of the EU. In this study, it is claimed that the European Refugee crisis is a phenomenon that affects the future of the EU, due to the reasons mentioned above. EU's legitimacy, democratic structure and increasing identity debates will be also tested at the same time.The EU, which currently holds ongoing debates and disagreements between nation-state dominance and national culture versus the cultural unity of Europe, has made the concept of identity more questionable with the discussions carried out by far-right and populist political actors, which is becoming more intense with the refugee crisis.The main argument of this study is the identity debate, which is placed at the center of the political discourses that nourish Eurosceptic thought and the strategies that are tried to be created in a Eurosceptic direction. Namely, the European Parliament (EP) elections held in 2019; has revealed the fact that the support for extreme right, populist and nationalist parties has increased at a high rate. Additionally, studies, surveys and reviews shows that the 2015 refugee crisis has a great share in the developments in the current governments and political actors. The surveys, the results of which will be presented in the study, have revealed that dissatisfaction and distrust of political leaders across Europe increased significantly in the relevant period.
