Abstract (EN)

Introduction and Purpose: Between 46-69% of individuals who apply to primary care report complaints of sleep disorders. This study aims to define the frequency of sleep disorders in individuals aged 18-65 who apply to Family Health Centers in the Efeler District of Aydın province and to determine its relationship with the potential risk of depression. Method: The population of this cross-sectional analytical study consists of individuals aged 18-65 who apply to primary care family health centers in the Efeler district of Aydın province. The sample size was calculated as 262 using the Epi Info 7.2.5.0 program. The study was conducted between 01.09.2023 and 01.11.2023 with 280 individuals who applied to Family Health Centers in the Efeler District of Aydın and agreed to participate in the study. Individuals diagnosed with psychiatric disorders were excluded. Participants were administered a sociodemographic data collection form, the Beck Depression Inventory, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. The obtained data were entered into the SPSS 18.0 database for statistical evaluation. Results: The average age of the participants was 38.52±13.81 years, with 50.7% being male and 49.3% female. According to the Beck Depression Inventory, 65.4% of the participants had minimal levels of depression, while 32.1% had mild levels. About 49.6% of the participants rated their sleep quality as quite good. When asked about their sleep duration, only 8.9% reported sleeping 7 hours or more. There was a significant relationship between regular exercise, smoking, and the presence of chronic illness with sleep quality (p<0.001). In evaluating the relationship between participants' ages and their average scores on the Beck Depression Inventory and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, no relationship was found between age and depression, but a significant relationship was found with the total PSQI score (p<0.001). A significant positive correlation was found between the BDI scores and the total PSQI scores (p<0.001). Conclusion: In our study, the rate of those with poor sleep quality was found to be 71.8%. Early diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders can reduce disease burden, lower healthcare costs, increase work efficiency, and improve individuals' quality of life. Especially depression and similar psychiatric disorders are often affected by sleep quality. Therefore, we believe that investigating the presence of the other disorder when one is present would be beneficial. Keywords: Depression, Adult, Sleep Quality
