An analysis of the types and characters in Bâkî’s dîvân in terms of value

Human beings have played a significant role among the sources that have shaped Classical Turkish poetry throughout its long historical development. The concepts of “type” and “character” represent two important ways in which human beings are portrayed in this literary tradition. The aim of this study is to identify the values reflected through the types and characters found in the Dîvân of Bâkî, a poet who occupies a distinguished place in Classical Turkish poetry, by examining these figures from a comprehensive perspective. Adopting a qualitative research approach, the study consists of an introduction, a theoretical framework and literature review, methodology, findings and discussion, and conclusion and recommendations sections. In the first part, information is provided on the concepts of type, character, and value. To clarify the purpose of the study more effectively, the concept of value is examined from various perspectives. The analytical section of the research is structured in two dimensions. In the first dimension, Bâkî’s Dîvân is examined in terms of its types and characters, and all identified figures are classified and presented systematically. In the second dimension, all couplets containing a type or character are reexamined from the perspective of value transmission, and the findings are interpreted accordingly. The analysis identified references to 83 different values, demonstrating that Bâkî’s Dîvân possesses a rich value-oriented content. This finding is significant because it highlights that Classical Turkish literature is deeply concerned with human beings and remains closely connected to both individual and societal values.
