Abstract (EN)

Purpose: To explore bariatric surgery patients' conditions with Roy Adaptation Model (RAM). Method: Research is a qualitative study, utilized phenomenological research design. The sample was composed of patients who underwent bariatric surgery (n: 32). The data were collected from December 2016 to June 2017 using a semi-structured in-depth interview method. The obtained data were evaluated by "content analysis". Findings: The mean age of participants was 40.28 + 09.94. 84.40% of the patients were female, 59.40% were married, 37.50% were higher education graduates and 37.50% were housewives. Results of content analysis of research data show that adaptive behaviors of patients who underwent bariatric surgery according to the Roy Adaptation Model were explained with the theme of "My life changed" and nonadaptive behaviors of patients were explained "what if I can not succeed" theme in the physiologic mode. The themes obtained in self concept mode were "Everything is good" for adaptive behavior and "Bad news" for nonadaptive behavior. In role function mode, "I can get through" theme was obtained for adaptive behavior. In the context of interdependence mode, "So glad I have them" theme was obtained for adaptive behaviors, "Unfortunately everyone has an idea" theme was found for the case of nonadaptive behaviors. Result: It was determined that patients experience various difficulties in adapting to their life and bodies after bariatric surgery, but the surgery leads to positive developments in body image, social life, personal relationships and maintaining their roles. On the other hand, it was identified that some patients were afraid of postoperative complications and experienced anxiety about gaining weight again. It is thought that patients will improve their adaptation after surgery as a result of observations based on multidisciplinary approach and support and reduce their complications. Key Words: Bariatric Surgery; Obesity; Roy Adaptation Model; Qualitative Research
