Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between fifth-grade students' attitudes and habits towards reading and their perceptions towards creative reading. The population of the research consists of 5th-grade students studying in private secondary and public secondary schools in Kahramanmaraş province center, Onikişubat and Dulkadiroğlu districts in the spring semester of 2021-2022 and the sample consists of 637 fifth-grade students determined by using convenience sampling method. The research was conducted by using relational survey model as one of the quantitative research methods. The data were obtained via "Attitudes and Habits Scale Towards Reading", "Perceptions Towards Creative Reading Scale" and "Personal Information Form". In the analysis of the data obtained, descriptive statistics, independent groups t-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Pearson's correlation analysis tests were performed by using the SPSS 22 program. The results obtained from the research show that the fifth-grade students' level of attitudes and habits towards reading are above the average, and female students' attitudes and habits towards reading are higher than male students. It is determined that students whose fathers have university graduate have high levels of negative attitudes and habits towards reading, and fifth-grade students who keep a regular diary and read more than one book a week have high levels of attitudes and habits towards reading. It is concluded that the variables of the mother's education status, having a library at home, and having a study room at home don't have a determining effect on the fifth-grade students' attitudes and habits levels towards reading. It is found that the fifth-grade students' perception levels towards creative reading are above the average. Besides, the fifth-grade students whose parents are university graduates, keep a regular diary, read more than one book a week, and have a study room at home, have higher perception levels towards creative reading. It is concluded that the variables of gender and having a library at home don't have a significant effect on the fifth-grade students' perceptions of towards creative reading. There is a positive and low-level significant relationship between the fifth-grade students' attitudes and habits towards reading and their perception levels towards creative reading.
