Abstract (EN)
Museums have been living, dynamic and changeable structures in every era they are in. With this dynamism, the intersection of people in the exhibition spaces made the museum structures alive. In this context, this thesis study was created by examining the typologies of private and public museums in Beyoğlu according to the specified titles. The aim of this research is to evaluate the typologies of the museums in Beyoğlu in accordance with the universal museum design principles and the experiences of the users within the framework of these principles. Interview, survey technique, field visits and open source scanning methods were used as research methods. Beyoğlu has hosted people from many nations for centuries and has had a lively life in terms of trade, culture and art in its history. This experience and cultural background make Beyoğlu a unique place. Today, the places that are the inheritors of this cultural heritage of Beyoğlu and that reflect it best are museums and exhibition areas. Turkey's museum history goes back to the 1800s and the first museum examples are seen in Istanbul. Today, the region with the most intense museums in Istanbul in terms of both quality and quantity is again Beyoğlu. Moreover, a new era has entered in museum activities around the world. Museums have become places that are more active and aim to provide an active museum experience to the users, rather than being the areas where only old, fixed works are exhibited. For this reason, compliance with universal design principles has become a matter for all museums around the world. It has been observed that the great majority of the museums in Beyoğlu, which are evaluated within this scope, have not yet adapted to all the universal design principles. In this thesis, typologies of private and public museums in Beyoğlu and the profiles of the users who have experienced these museums are evaluated. In this context, evaluations about how the structure of museums affect the user experience, how the museum structures can be improved in terms of functionality and usability, and how to make museums more accessible for users are presented.
