The effect of cognitive code learning approach on grammar achievement of Turkish learners as a foreign language

Our research aims to examine whether the lessons prepared within the framework of cognitive learning theory have an effect on the success of foreign nationals between the ages of 18-30 who learn Turkish as a foreign language on their grammar learning. The aim of the study is to determine whether individuals who learn Turkish as a foreign language can learn the grammar subjects prepared with methods and techniques developed in the light of cognitive learning theory faster and easier. The study was conducted at the Turkish Language Teaching Application and Research Center of a university located in Konya province. Within the scope of the study, a mixed design method was used in which quantitative and qualitative research methods were used together. The number of students in the study was 11 and their language level was C1. Throughout the implementation, the students were trained only with the methods and techniques within the framework of the meaningful learning model of the cognitive approach. Before starting the 6-week training, a grammar achievement test including C1 level grammar topics was administered to the students at the beginning of the course. At the end of the course, a second grammar achievement test was administered and a posttest was administered. After the post-test, individual interviews were conducted with the students and the researcher asked them whether the training they received contributed to their grammar learning. In the study, both an interview was conducted with the students and an interview form was filled out by the students in order to obtain their opinions in writing. Then, the data collected with both quantitative and qualitative data collection tools were analyzed with quantitative and qualitative data analysis methods. The data obtained from the pre-test and post-test were analyzed using the SPSS 23 package program. Qualitative data were analyzed with software called Taransktiptor and MAXQDA. According to the findings obtained from the study, it was concluded that if education is carried out with a correct, systematic and conscious education method, efficient results can be obtained even from a traditional method and contribute to the development of students and finally, recommendations were made to academicians, students and individuals and institutions who want to prepare language teaching materials in the context of cognitive code learning approach.
