Abstract (EN)
Aim: In this study, it was aimed to compare bipolar disorder and schizophrenia in terms of brain midline structural differences and to determine possible neurodevelopmental differences. Subject: This study were carried out with patients the diagnosis of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia according to DSM-IV criteria and who are undergoing treatment in Celal Bayar University Hospital Psychiatry Clinic between April 2012 and December 2017. As a result, 112 bipolar disorder patients and 87 schizophrenia patients were included in the study. In sagittal sections, the corpus callosum and fornix areas were measured by free hand technique and the midline area was found. In addition, the corpus callosum and fornix areas were measured in each section and the results were computed and the volume was calculated. CSP transverse diameter and length were measured in coronal images, and CSP classified in 5 stages according to increasing size. In coronal sections, the presence of adhesio interthalamica was investigated. Results: According to bipolar disorder, the prevalence of CSP increased and sizes of CSP were greater in schizophrenia. CSP sizes were higher in bipolar disorder with psychotic symptoms than bipolar disorder without psychotic findings. Absance adhesio interthalamica ratio is higher in schizophrenia according to bipolar disorder. No differences were found between the two diseases in terms of corpus callosum and fornix dimensions. Conclusion: Schizophrenia has been more affected in neurodevelopment than bipolar disorder. Key words: Cavum septum pellucidum, corpus callosum, adhesio interthalamica, fornix, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, neurodevelopment
