Teachers opinions related to the assessment based on portfolio

21th century is an era that the people are required to be able to reach the data, use the data, learn by themselves, follow the developments and adapt to the changes. So the education systems should make the students learn the ways for reaching the data and develop the skills of problem solving ve making decision. Under the lights of these necessities, the new studies are being made also in Turkey. One of these regulations is that curriculum for the primary and secondary education has been developed in 2004 and based on the constructivist approach.The new curriculum has innovated in the assessment period as in most of the other topics and in appropriate to the constructivist approach process assessment technique has been practised as well as the product assessment techniques. One of these assessment techniques is the assessment based on the portfolios. The assessment based on the portfolios has been practised so recently that a lot of problems may be revealed. Considering that the teachers play a key role in practising of the portfolios, determining the problems that the teachers encounter and solving these problems have become important.In this study, the aim is to determine the teachers? opinions related to assessment based on portfolios in the primary and secondary schools.The datum was collected by the way of semi-structured interviews among the qualitative research methods in order to find out the problems related to the assessment based on the portfolios. The descriptive technique was used in analyzing the datum and the obtained findings were presented by digitizing.In the study, it was interviewed with 28 teachers working in 8 primary schools among 102 primary schools bounded up to Eskisehir Directorship of Education in the 2006-2007 Education Year.According to the findings obtained as a result of the study, it was revealed that assessment based on portfolio is quite important for students, it ensures the development of children, it provides teachers to follow the improvements of students and to know them better, it helps students to monitor their self-development and self-assessment. Furthermore, it was understood that teachers encounter some problems related to the assessment based on portfolio. Overcrowded classrooms, teachers? lack of knowledge about portfolios, limited physical facilities such as; -not being able to insert some studies in dossier, inadequate cupboards where dossiers can be kept, impracticable classroom to keep dossiers- lack of time, parents preparing performances in the dossiers and economic conditions of students are among the encountered difficulties. Moreover, teachers recommended some solutions such as giving seminars to teachers about portfolios, providing schools with facilities in order to display dossiers, making classrooms available for keeping portfolios, renewing the testing system, decreasing the number of students per class and providing the equipments needed for portfolio activities by schools.
