The economic analysis of afforestation made with the buror terracing method

The aim of this thesis is to make an economic evaluation of the Buror Terracing, which has been used extensively as an afforestation method, on erosion and flood control studies in Turkey for the last 11 years. Firstly, the construction costs of Buror Terracing and the man-made gradoni terracing were calculated and compared with the General Directorate of Forestry's 2020 unit prices. In addition, after calculating the wood product value and carbon emissions of the lands that could be afforested using only the Buror Terracing method in Turkey, the land revenue values were calculated by using the Faustmann Formula. The construction cost of Buror Terracing was found to be 488 TL/km (11%) cheaper than the man-made terracing. On an estimated 1 million hectares of sloping land, which will not be able to work by dozers and workers but can only be afforested by the Buror Terracing method, in the case of afforestation with Pinus brutia for 35 years of rotation period, based on wood product; Land Revenue Value; is found; to be 10.716.549.005 TL based on 2% interest rate, -54.691.297 TL (negative) based on 3% interest rate. If the monetary value of carbon emission is added to wood product income, the Total Land Revenue Value is found; based on 2% interest rate, to be 42.897.881.651 TL if the nominal value of a ton of carbon is taken as $20, 67.033.881.136 TL if the nominal value of a ton of carbon is taken as $35; based on 3% interest rate, to be 17.685.262.559 TL if the nominal value of a ton of carbon is taken as $20, to be 30.990.227.950 TL if the nominal value of a ton of carbon is taken as $35. Therefore, afforestation made with the Buror Terracing method is economic, fast and cost-effective.
