Facade organizations of the 19th century houses on the Nizam Region of Büyükada

Even though it is very close to Istanbul throughout the history, Princess Islands that have been always on the second plan began to revitalize with 19th century and gradually attained its current appearance. The islands gained their first identity of summer place after surviving being the place of exile and seclusion. This of course has affected the architectural character and structure of the houses on the islands. Moreover architects and workers working here predominantly being non Muslim added western touches to Ottoman Turk architecture. Among the Istanbul Islands, Büyükada is different from the rest of them in terms of the density of the mentioned architectural examples and the variety of styles. Nowadays it is very rare to see a street and historical place surrounded by historical structures. From this point Büyükada is also one of the examples of historical settlements that protected its structure. These are the main reasons why Büyükada is given the main priority in this research. The islands will be able to transfer their historical values to the next generations as long as they are protected. With development of sea transportation in the late 19th century, the islands became a new, vibrant area of interest and western influenced eclectic, neo-classical features can be found in a great deal of practices on the islands. Büyükada which is the biggest among all the islands, forms the study source of my thesis. The aim of this thesis includes the short geography of Büyükada, history, the development of settlement in Büyükada and the factors that guide the architecture of Büyükada. Furthermore, the houses which are worth protecting and showing the period characteristics will be examined under several titles. The ones that protected their characters mostly will be examined in detail. Those mentioned houses will be subcategorized such as material and technic, plan types, facade arrangement, patterns. In conclusion architecture of Büyükada will be evaluated and determinations will be done about the position/location/structure of late Ottoman house architecture.
