Abstract (EN)
Representing their subjectivity in visual culture, such as physical disabilities, mental disabilities, etc., has remained a very difficult question to answer since the history of humanity. People with disabilities are created and displayed without their approval as to the appearance of their bodies rather than how they will be portrayed in artistic works. The artists used various people with mental disabilities (and other disabled persons) to transmit and demonstrate ugliness, pain, evil and reinforce stereotypes about disability. In this thesis, intellectual disability issues are discussed conceptually and literally. The ways in which these concepts are reflected in art are described and the perspectives that exist in the art of painting are emphasized. Broadly the "perfect body" is shown as the normative body. The concept of an abnormal-deformed body is seen as the restriction of the body's action capacity due to deformity. Based on these comparisons, studies that have effects on art history are included. What were the effects of disabled people on art creations? What are their historical representations? We will see how and how much disabled bodies and mentally disabled people are featured by different artists in any social environment or next to us, which surprise or disturb us. There are also representations of disabled people in visual culture where exclusion and discrimination are in question by approaching culturally and politically. It will be seen how these representations create an impact and reaction in the field of art and culture.
