Abstract (EN)

In forensic medicine, there are various methods for determining dental and skeletal age from radiographs. However, these techniques can offer varying degrees of success in different geographies and races. The aim of this study is to evaluate the applicability of Cameriere et al.'s age determination methods for four different groups in the province of Uşak. 200 panoramic radiographs of individuals aged 5-15 years for the open apex method and 200 panoramic radiographs of individuals aged 14-22 for the third molar; 200 periapical radiographs of individuals aged 22-78 for canine and 200 cephalometric radiographs of individuals aged 7 to 18 years for cervical vertebrae were retrospectively analyzed and a regression model was created. The explanatory coefficient of the new formula created for the open apex technique was calculated as 61.7% (R2= 61.7%). The explanatory coefficient of the formula obtained for the third molar technique is 45.9%. It was concluded that the formula created for the technique of canine teeth was insufficient in estimating the chronological age when evaluated for women and men. (P > 0.05). The formula obtained for the cervical vertebra method was considered successful with an average estimation error of 1.97 and an explanatory coefficient of 21.5%. (R2=21.5%). In conclusion, the open apex method of Cameriere et al. is a viable method for the Turkish population. The second technique, based on measurements on the third molar tooth, is applicable for age determination; however, it is recommended 8 to combine with different methods for precise results. The third technique was found to be insufficient for age estimation for the Turkish population when applied as suggested by the authors. For the fourth group, the technique based on measurements over the fourth cervical vertebrae is a valid method; however, it is thought that more accurate results can be obtained if statistical analysis is performed as suggested by the authors instead of regression analysis.
