Forms of negation and non-existence in the saga of Cengizname

This is a study on the forms of negation and non-existence in the Saga of Cengiznama written in Chagatai Turkish. Forms of negation and non-existence in the Turkish Language is not one of the subjects independently handled with. Therefore, this study focuses on the said forms available in the Saga of Cengizname written by Ötemiş Hacı. Forms of negation and non-existence available in the Saga of Cengizname is studied in comparison with the forms of negation and non-existence used in the historical Turkish dialects. Nonetheless, an attempt was also made to locate the forms of negation and non-existence in Chagatai Turkish used in the selected works of Ali Şir Nevai, a classic period poet, (Münacat, Çihil Hadis,mNazmü'l-Cevahir, Kitab-ı Sıracü'l Müslimin). Forms of negation and non-existence in the classic Chagatai Turkish were used in the Saga of Cengizname. However, the forms of negation and non-existence in the Oghuz Turkish have also been found. It was found out that for the phrase of ability, the auxiliary verb –bil in the Oghuz Turkish was used together with the auxiliary verb al- in the Chagatai Turkish: Néçe yıllar ḳabāb uruş saldılar, alabilmediler (C.40b-4); for the negation indication, the suffix –mAz in the Oghuz Turkish was used together with in the characteristic suffix –mAs in the Chagatai Turkish Muḥammediye kāfir żaife sütini emmez, tédiler (C.41b-2); and the suffix –mAz was used in place of the present time suffix –mAz: Bu cihettin ḳābūl ḳılmaymén.
