Abstract (EN)

Due to increase in population and environmental problems after industrialization, the efforts to reduce energy consumption, have gained importance all over the world. There are many studies concerning how to manage energy consumption in buildings which have a significant role in energy consumption. Solutions for high-rise buildings and facades that covers large surfaces, have drawn attention to create solutions for energy efficiency. Ongoing innovative studies, research on smart materials and the increasing demand of the usage of these materials also have importance in designing the concept of energy efficient structures. Within the scope of the study, the question of "Can the usage of smart materials in the facade systems of high buildings, contribute to energy efficiency?" is asked. Based on this purpose, the advantages and disadvantages of smart materials based on the energy efficiency concept were presented with tables that are developed as a result of evaluation of criteria such as heat conservation, daylight benefit natural ventilation energy production integrated into the facade, energy conservation by minimizing cleaning and maintenance costs, non-toxic substances and being long life.
