Determination of effect compliance with the "central line insertion checklist" during central vascular catheterization insertion on complication situations at the pediatric intensive care unit

Objective: This study was conducted to determine effect of compliance with the "Central Line Insertion Checklist" (CLIC) during CVC insertion on complication situations at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Materials and Methods: The experimental and intervention type study was carried out in Ege University Hospital Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) between February and August 2017. The sample of the study consisted of 60 patients between 1 month and 18 years of age who were hospitalized in the PICU. In the study, was tested the validity and reliability of the SYGKL, which was developed by the researchers in line with the current literature information. Data were collected with "Patient Identification Form", "CLIC" and "List of Complications Related to CVC". In the studywere calculated "Content Validity Index (CVI)" and Kuder Richardson 20 (KR 20) reliability coefficient. In the analysis of the data; Descriptive statistics, Correlation, Kappa, Mann Whitney U, Chi-square and Independent Sample t tests were used. Results: Of the patients included the research were 51.7% male, age mean 3.76±4.77 years and CVC duration mean 8.98±6.75 days. In the research it was found 68.3% of the patients' CVC was closed because of the transferring to the clinic of the closed CVC. It was determined that the 56.7% of the CVCs has taken to the patients has double lumen, 45% of them has three lumen and 51.7% of them inserted by assistant doctor, 95% with 2 person and 56.7% were on femoral vein, 41.7% jugular vein, 76.7% left side. In the study, 68.3% of the patients were found to have complications due to SVC.In the analyzes; It was found that the CVI of the "CLIC" was 0.95 and the reliability coefficient KR 20 was 0.60. It was foundto be high that the mean number of substances applied in the "CLIC" during CVC insertion was 38.55±2.27 and the mean of substance ratio was 0.794 ± 0.055. In addition, it was found that compliance with "CLIC" during CVC insertion did not affect the complication status of the patient. Conclusion: It is thought that the complication development may have been positively affected because of the high compliance with CLIC at the time of insertion of CVCs in the PICU.
