Comperative evaluation of effectiveness of powered/manual toothbrushing on plaque removal in children

Good oral hygiene is essential to prevent dental caries and periodontal diseases, and effective removal of plaque biofilms is crucial in maintaining oral health. Tooth brushing is the most effective mechanical method for plaque control. Since it is difficult to perform effective tooth brushing in children, it is necessary to find a tooth brushing method that is more suitable for children. In studies comparing the success of electric and manual toothbrushes in paediatric patients, no definite conclusion has been reached as to which brush type is superior. The aim of this study was to evaluate the comparative effectiveness of electric and manual toothbrushes in plaque removal. At the same time, it was aimed to determine which of the two different oral hygiene education methods provided more favourable results on brushing efficiency. Forty children aged 8-12 years were included in the study. 20 children received electric toothbrushing training and 20 children received manual toothbrushing training. These groups were also divided into two sub-groups and in one sub-group, patients were given brushing training on the model, while in the other sub-group, training was given with video narration. Plaque index measurements were made for each group at the first examination (day 0), day 15 and day 30. Silness & Löe Plaque Index was used to evaluate the amount of plaque on the teeth. As a result of the statistical analyses performed after the measurements were completed, it was seen that the group with the highest reduction in plaque levels was the group that used electric toothbrushes and received oral hygiene education on the model. It was concluded that while pediatric dentists recommend toothbrushes to their patients, they can also recommend electric toothbrushes, knowing that the effectiveness of electric toothbrushes in plaque removal is high, and it is more motivating to provide oral hygiene education by explaining face-to-face on the model.
