The effect of virtual reality glasses in relieving fear, anxiety and pain during dressing procedure in children

This research is aimed to determine of the fear, anxiety and pain level, during the dressing process, which is a painful application, in children aged 6-12 years, by using the "Virtual Reality Glass-VR", which is one of the non-pharmacological methods that distracts attention. The universe of the study consisted of 50 pediatric patients between the ages of 6 and 12 who needed dressings and outpatients/inpatients who applied to "Bingöl State Hospital Wound Care Unit", " Orthopedics/Plastic Surgery Clinic" and "Bingöl Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital Pediatric Surgery Clinic" between 14/01/2021-30/06/2021. In the collection of data; "Descriptive Information Form" which was created by the researcher consisting of 27 questions, "Visual Analog Scale (VAS)", "Wong Baker Faces Pain Scale (WBFPS)", "Child Fear and Anxiety Scale (CFS)" and "Virtual Reality Glasses" were used. In this study, according to whether or not to use virtual reality glasses of children whose dressings were changed; children's VAS and WBFPS pain averages and CFS fear and anxiety averages were evaluated. The children scores were evaluated according to the mother/father and the researcher expression. As a result of the statistical evaluation; before, during and after the procedure, a statistical difference was found in VAS and WBFPS pain averages of the children between the pre-test, in which the virtual reality glasses were not used, and the post-test, in which the virtual reality glasses were used. In addition; It was determined that there was a statistically significant difference between the averages of fear and anxiety of CFS (p=0.000).In conclusion; It has been determined that the use of virtual reality glasses, which is one of the methods of diverting attention during the dressing process in children, is effective in reducing fear, anxiety and pain.
