The relationship of social life and space in multi-storey housing: Bursa, Odunluk region as a case

Cities have been the most populated areas throughout the history. Migration from the village to the city has increased with the effect of globalization; as a result, people have become urbanized. In this process, residence and residential areas continue to evolve and transform just like people.With the development of technological opportunities and increasing social interaction, people focused on consumption rather than production and the concept of "consumer society" emerged. As the consumer society started to see living spaces as a consumption object, the demand for different forms of buildings in cities has increased.Since people regard their living spaces as an expression of prestige, they have started to prefer to live together in environments that have similar opportunities with groups suitable for their social status. In line with the demands of the new consumer group, besides luxury and prestigious presentation forms in and out of the city, there is a prestigious home production in the city with similar features. As a result of the life style is offered by this form of production, secure residential blocks has increased the social segregation in the cities.Especially the type of high-rise residential blocks allowed the upper class to live in the city, but isolated from the city. This situation causes many social and spatial problems. In the thesis, the relationship between social life and space is discussed in multi-storey residential blocks, whose prevalence is increasing in cities. Residence owners' spatial benefits and their effects on neighborhood relations are examined.Based on the results obtained from the researches, spatial suggestions were provided to support the positive development of social relations in the residences.
