ABSTRACTMSc THESISCOMBUSTION CHAMBER DESIGN WITHCOMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICRamazan AKARDEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERINGINSTITUTE OF NATURAL AND APPLIED SCIENCESUNIVERSITY OF ÇUKUROVASupervisor : Prof. Dr. Kadir AYDINYear: 2005, Pages: 158Jury : Prof. Dr. Kadir AYDINAssoc. Prof. Dr. Hüseyin AKILLIAssoc. Prof. Dr. Recep YURTALIn this study, flow characteristics of some engine models in two dimension, threedimension and dynamic model were investigated numerically by means of FLUENTCFD solver. FLUENT program uses finite volume method in order to model the flowinside of engine. Experimental results obtained by Yasar were used for one enginemodel to validate numerical result and to have solution methods for other enginemodels. Numerical methods were carried out at various valve gaps for all models. The results of numerical studies show that flow structure is highly affected bythe valve position and cylinder length. The result obtained by dynamic grid model isthought to have a great importance in engine design period. It is seen that burned gaslevel in combustion chamber from previous cycle is influenced by valve timing. Results obtained from one intake port model shows good agreement withexperimental results. Keywords: Intake Flow, Combustion, Fluent, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD),Finite Volume Method.I
