A georgion monastery in Çoruh Valley (Tao-klarjeti region): Khakhuli Monastery Church (Taş mosque) and its dependencies conservation project

In this thesis; Khakhuli Monastery located in the village of Bağbaşı, Tortum district, Erzurum province is documented and its conservation project is prepared. In the content, by survey investigations made on the site, historical process of the building is determined. In the first chapter of the thesis, previous researches on medieval Georgian architecture in Çoruh Valley, the aim of the study and the methods that used were explained. The aim of this study is to document the existing condition of the structure, to prepare the restitution project of building, to decide a suitable new functions and to determine the suitable interventions for the restoration of the Khakhuli Monastery Church and its dependencies. In the second section of the study, the location and the historical development, some monuments of medieval Georgian architecture in Çoruh Valley are analyzed. In the third chapter, buildings was defined in terms of all its properties. Historical, architectural and structural properties of Khakhuli Monastery Church and its dependencies were evaluated under subtitles. In the fourth chapter, the original design of the building and the changes that occurred in the course of time were verified depending on the data provided from building, written and visual documents and similar buildings. In the fifth chapter, restoration proposals for the building were explained. A suitable new functions for the Khakhuli Monastery Church and its dependencies were determined. The work is summed up with the evaluation of all the informations and recommendations.
