Abstract (EN)
According to World Health Organization (WHO), cancer is a group of diseases resulting from the overgrowth of cells with the potential for invasion or metastasis into other parts of the body. Cancer is the second leading cause of death after heart disease in the world. It is known that there are several causes of cancer including the exposure to chemicals or physical agents involving environmental pollutants, radiation, tobacco, overweight or underweight, and some sex hormones. Cytochrome P450-1A1 (CYP1A1) is an extrahepatic phase I metabolizing enzyme. Expression of CYP1A1 is suppressed under physiologic conditions but substrates via the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) can be induced CYP1A1 activation. Recent studies have shown that the majority of breast cancer tumors constitutively express CYP1A1. CYP1A1 gene polymorphisms have been analyzed in relation to risk of many different cancers, though there are not many studies related to breast cancer. Epidemiological studies suggest a possible relationship between CYP1A1 polymorphisms and breast cancer risk. This study aims to show breast cancer risk associated with of CYP1A1 T3801C polymorphism in the Turkish population. Another aim of the current study is to define the relationship between CYP1A1 T3801C polymorphism and prognostic features of breast cancer such as menopausal status, lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis, receptor status, radiotherapy and chemotherapy intake. In this study, peripheral blood samples of 100 patients who were diagnosed with breast cancer and 100 healthy individuals were subject to this study. CYP1A1 T3801C polymorphism was detected by using RFLP method.
