The relationship between the climbers' coping with stress and the self-respect in decision making and decision-making styles

Abstract (EN)

The purpose of this research; is to examine the relationship between the climbers' coping with stress and the self-respect in decision making and decision-making styles. In total 130 climbers from Turkish Mountaineering Federation who have "mountaineering training completion certificate" have participated to the research. While the collection of data the Inventory of Coping Stress and Melbourne Decision Making scales are used.. In the analysis of data, ANOVA and t test are used in order to determinate the differences according to the demographic characteristics of the obtained scores from the climbers. The relationship between coping with stress and decision making has been tested with Pearson's correlation analysis. As a result of analysis, it has been seen that there are significant differences in age, education level, marital status, occupation of the mountaineers' coping with stress. Under the self-regard of decision making of the mountaineers' significant differences have been found in terms of only age and marital status. Also between mountaineers' coping with stress and sub-dimensions of decision making styles, a positive relation is determined between active planning and careful decision making styles and also between panic decision making styles and abstraction escape. On the other hand a negative relation is determined between active planning and avoidant, panic decision making styles. As a result; it is seen that according to the older mountaineers, younger mountaineers resort to cigarette, alcohol; biochemical pathways and they flee from stressful events in a passive way or abstract themselves. In the case of education; according to the low education level mountaineers, the higher education level mountaineers show behaviors towards problem solving, creating a plan of action and getting more information when they face with stress. It is determined that in terms of marital status; according to unmarried climbers, married climbers pray when they face with stress and take refuge in divine power. It is also determined that in self-regard of decision making of the mountaineers' the older (age of 38 and over) and married climbers show a confident attitude and self-important in decision making. In addition, it has been seen that climbers generally show impetuous behaviors by feeling themselves under time pressure while fleeing or abstracting from events in a passive way. It is determined that when the mountaineers face with stress they tend to choose the most suitable alternative to the situation by getting more information, behaving towards problem solving and doing research about the event under creation a plan of action in attitude.
