The relationship between demografic factors and the level of organizational commitment, organizational citizenship behaviour and perceived organizational support of seafarers' working in the maritime sector

Organizational commitment, organizational citizenship behaviour and perceived organizational support concepts have positive effects on the organizations. The personal, organizational and non organizational factors that have contributions on these concepts were defined in the literature widely. The main purpose of the current research is to measure the relationship betweeen demografic factors and organizational commitment, organizational citizenship behaviour and perceived organizational support of seafarers who work in the maritime sector that has hard and complex working conditions than the other areas. Regarding with that; age, marital status, education level, income level, professional categories and tenure variables are tried to be related to the organizational commitment, organizational citizenship behaviour and perceived organizational support. The relationship between seafarers? organizational commitment, organizational citizenship behaviour and perceived organizational support levels are also discussed.In the first section of the study, the definitions concerning organizational commitment, organizational citizenship behaviour and perceived organizational support are given and the concept about them is try to be given. In the second section maritime sector is inquired and various information is given about the sector. Also human resource approach in the maritime sector is discussed and the problems of seafarers? are determined. In the last and the third section, the application which is tried to determine the relationship between the demografic factors of seafarers? and their organizational commitment, organizational citizenship behaviour and perceived organizational support and the relationship between each other is given. Lastly implications and recommendations for future research are given.The questionnaires which were prepared to investigate these relationships are applied to the personnel of the ships that had visited the port of Aliağa and Nemrut within 3 months. The questionnaires are applied to 218 seafarers and 200 of them are evaluated.So our results show that, seafarers? organizational commitment, organizational citizenship behaviour and perceived organizational support level are different from each other according to their demografic variables. Because of this, we result that demografic factors are effective on organizational commitment, organizational citizenship behaviour and perceived organizational support.
